Anti-rent movement
Jan 1845
Copake, Columbia Co., New York
article – anti-rent movement in area. It started with the death of landowner Stephen Van Rensselaer in 1839, his will allowed his heirs to collect outstanding rents to apply to estate debts. His tenants were trying to break their leases. They held meetings, decided they would dress like Indians & they were armed. This led to the accidental death of William H Riphenburgh in Claverack. Daniel & others made a resolution declaring their disagreement with such actions
